eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 5m038 CHARLIE CHAN'S SECRET WC '36 great super close up of Asian detective Warner Oland! Date Sold 12/9/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 12" x 16" [30 x 41 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Secret, the 1936 Gordon Wiles Asian detective crime mystery thriller ("Is Chan doomed at last?"; "Death strikes unseen! Dread peril threatens! But his lips are sealed! Why?"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Rosina Lawrence, Charles Quigley, Henrietta Crosman, Edward Trevor, Astrid Allwyn, Herbert Mundin, Ivan Miller, and Francis Ford. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this window card has been trimmed and it now measures 12" x 16" [30 x 41 cm]. Condition: fair. The card was found in the back of a frame where it had been used as a backing board for a picture (many framers in the 1930s would use window cards for this purpose, and they would trim them to the size of the frame, not caring that they were cutting into the image!). In this case, the trimming, which was to 12" x 16", affects the right and top of the card (in addition, someone rounded the top right corner), and you can see what is missing by looking at our image. Since most of the title remains, I would think many people could display this card as is, but please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its significant defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored! Note that other than the trimming, the card had two tears in the left border which were repaired with tape from the back and some faint smudges and stains around the edges.
