An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked English Three-Sheet Stage Play Poster (3sh; measures 39 3/4" x 88 1/4" [101 x 224 cm]) (Learn More) Babes in the Wood, the circa 1930s English stage play production. The posters feature really cool artwork (one three-sheet has a well-dressed female knight with two small children in the woods, another three-sheet features sleeping children and birds, the six-sheet has a great image of two small children in the woods with living trees menacing them, and the British quad has two small children watching two men dueling with swords)! A collector from England tells us he believes that this poster (and the other English stage play posters from other classic fairy tales) were used for local Christmas pantomimes (that were very professional productions) that were held all over England for many years. Most of the posters were produced by Taylors of Wombwell from 1929 to the late 1930s (but it seems likely that the posters we are auctioning date from the late 1930s). It was quite common in those pantomimes for women to play boys' roles, and for men to play the roles of unlikeable women (like witches and mean old ladies!). If anyone knows more about this play or this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never had this English three-sheet, which measures 39 3/4" x 88 1/4" [101 x 224 cm], before. It has the same title as the 1930s English pantomime stage play three-sheets and six-sheets we have auctioned, but it has a completely different image, and has no printer information as they do. It has a somewhat "older" look than those (which we know to be from the 1930s), so we wonder if perhaps this one is from the earlier 1930s or maybe even earlier. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had some tears and tiny bits of paper loss on small parts of some folds and a few tiny bits of paper loss and creases scattered in the poster. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
