Date Sold 8/8/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise, the 1940 Eugene Forde mystery crime thriller ("Chan's best friend murdered! ... and clutched in his fingers -- Chan's only clue --- thirty pieces of silver!"; "Cunning, callous, cold-blooded killer challenges Charlie Chan! ...leaving on each victim a calling card of crimson coin - thirty pieces of silver!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; "Based on the story 'Charlie Chan Carries On' by Earl Derr Biggers"; since this was the name of the very first Warner Oland Charlie Chan, then this movie was a re-make of that movie!) starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Marjorie Weaver, Lionel Atwill, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Sen Yung"; as Jimmy Chan), Robert Lowery, Don Beddoe, Leo G. Carroll (billed as "Leo Carroll"), Cora Witherspoon, Kay Linaker, Harlan Briggs, Layne Tom, Jr. (as Willie Chan, "No. 8 Son"; he had previously played "Charlie Chan Jr." in "Charlie Chan at the Olympics"), Leonard Mudie, and James Burke. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this one-sheet, and that was 23 years ago! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the middle crossfold and tiny paper loss at the other two crossfolds. It had some creases, tiny tears, and a few tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds. There was small paper loss in the left of the bottom border that extended into the "PER" of "PROPERTY". The bottom 1" of the poster was folded back at one time. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. At some point after it was backed, it was roughly handled, and there are now creases near the bottom center, which extend into the bottom of the poster slightly (see our image).
