An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 26" x 33 1/2") (Learn More) Marihuana, the 1935 Dwain Esper marijuana marihuana pot weed drug crime thriller ("Daring Drug Expose!"; "Horror Shame Despair!"; "Today's headlines.... Tomorrow's despair....!"; "What happens at marihuana parties?"; "Lust crime sorrow despair shame hate"; "Not recommended for children"; "Smoke that gets in youth's eyes!"; "Misery"; "Weird orgies, wild parties, unleashed passions!"; "America's Crime Creator!"; "A puff of smoke changed their lives!"; "The weed with roots in Hell!", "The sweet pill...that makes life bitter!"; "The most daring picture ever made!") starring Harley Wood, Gloria Browne, Pat Carlyle, Juanita Crosland, Dorothy Dehn, Paul Ellis, Richard Erskine, Hugh McArthur and Hal Taggart. At the time this movie was meant to be a "daring drug expose", but it is now laughable and a camp classic, and posters from the first release of the movie in 1935 (and the roadshow releases that followed it in the late 1930s and early 1940s) are both rare and extremely desired by collectors. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that it is impossible to date this poster. The movie was first released in 1935, but it was taken around the U.S. and played in individual towns and cities over the next 20 years. Looking at the poster and the quality of the printing, I would guess it is possibly from the early 1940s, but there is no way of knowing for sure. No matter when it is from (whether the 1930s or 1940s), it is certainly a wonderful poster! Note that there is at least one other similar version of this poster which appears to date from the same time (it has very similar art, but a slightly different layout and background colors) and there are also similar posters with less color that seem to date from the 1950s. It would be great if someone could compile images of EVERY different poster from this movie (and even better, if someone could put dates to some of them), but I am not waiting for that to happen anytime soon! Condition: fair. The poster has been trimmed on all four sides and it now measures 26" x 33 1/2". It appears that only the blank left and right borders were trimmed off, but it is impossible to say exactly what was trimmed from the top and bottom. I have a memory of seeing another example of this poster that had a blank top area (like on a window card), and it seems quite possible that this poster might have had that same blank area, and that it was trimmed off, which would explain why it only measures 33 1/2" high. But looking at the part of the poster that IS there, it does not seem to be missing anything, so it seems likely that the missing area is either blank black and white paper, or printing information. In addition to being trimmed, the poster is separating across most of the bottom foldline and has many tears and small areas of paper loss across the middle foldline and a larger area of paper loss at the right of the middle foldline. There is paper loss at the bottom crossfold in the red hand. There is a 2" tear in the top of the poster that extends into the girl's hair and smaller tears around the edges of the poster. Certainly, this poster has many, many defects, but it is also true that a talented restorer can certainly linenback it and touch up its defects (either re-creating missing border areas, or not doing so), but either way, the poster will look great after proper restoration, and there really will not be a lot of paint restoration in the image area!
