An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Sorrows of Satan, the 1926 D.W. Griffith silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("Satan, flung from Heaven, brings Temptation to the World!"; "A strictly modern drama of love, temptation, thrills and regeneration stupendously conceived!"; based on the story "By Marie Corelli"; about a man who has little success, and who blames God for his misfortune, and the Devil appears as dapper Adolphe Menjou, and offers him unlimited success if he will follow the Devil's commands, and he makes the bargain, and becomes hugely successful, but must marry the woman the Devil chooses for him, even though he still loves his former sweetheart, and at the climax of the movie, he completely rejects the Devil and is allowed to end the bargain, presumably with God's help!) starring Adolphe Menjou ("as Satan"), Ricardo Cortez, Lya De Putti, Carol Dempster, Ivan Lebedeff, and Marcia Harris. Note that this movie was based on the 1895 novel of the same name by Marie Corelli, which was of course loosely based on the German legend "Faust", with a man selling his soul to the Devil (and many stories and movies have used the same theme, including "All That Money Can Buy", with Walter Huston as The Devil). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was found in an amazing find of silent inserts that we auctioned on 8/3/2010. There were two examples of two of the best inserts in that find, this poster, plus "New York", and we are auctioning the second examples of both of those posters in this auction (we are also re-auctioning the "Babe Comes Home" insert that was not paid for from that 8/3 auction). There are no further examples of this poster, so this is a rare "second chance" to purchase this wonderful poster (the first example, which was in slightly better condition than this example auctioned for $1,464). Also note that this poster has never been folded! Most insert posters were folded twice horizontally right off of the printing press. It is very difficult to find an unfolded example of most insert posters, especially from before 1970! Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. It had some smudges around the edges and a 3" tear in the lower right border, extending solely into the white background between the title and the credits. There were pinholes in the top and bottom borders. A talented restorer cleaned the poster and repaired the tear, but otherwise did no restoration, and the poster was NOT backed. The poster is in only slightly lesser condition than the other example of this poster that was discovered . Learn More about condition grades
