An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Argentinean Movie Poster (measures 29" x 43 1/2" [74 x 110 cm]) (Learn More) Espagueti (literally translates from Spanish to "Spaghetti", perhaps this is Popeye's name in Argentina?), the circa 1940s Argentinean animated animation cartoon comedy stock poster featuring Popeye. Theaters could order this poster and display it when showing any Popeye shorts. Popeye is the spinach eating super strong sailor character created by Elzie Crisler Segar (E.C. Segar) in 1929 in his newspaper comic strip called "Thimble Theatre" (later changed to "Popeye the Sailor"). He first appeared on screen in a 1933 Max Fleischer Betty Boop cartoon aptly titled "Popeye the Sailor", and he was an instant hit, and over the years, he appeared in hundreds of theatrical and television animated cartoons, comic strips, and movies. He was portrayed by Robin Williams in the 1980 movie Popeye. Those who only know the character from the cartoons might think he was illiterate and did little except fight Bluto (later named "Brutus"), but actually, in the wonderful comic strip in the 1930s, he was very philosophical and the strip had many intricate story lines, with very little fighting! In fact, when Bruce Hershenson was publishing his first movie poster book, Cartoon Movie Posters, he wanted to include all the Popeye posters, and he couldn't find anyone with an image of this poster. Finally, he located a collector who had it, and kindly lent it to Bruce to picture in the book. Now, 25 years later, that collector has passed away, and he left instructions for Bruce Hershenson to auction this poster! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good.
