A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 33 3/4" x 48 1/2" [86 x 123 cm]) (Learn More)

JOB rolling papers is a popular brand of cigarette paper product first invented by French craftsman Jean Bardou in 1838. He made them out of thin rice paper and trademarked the packaging with his initials "JB" and a diamond in between. Because the diamond was often mistaken for a capital O, in 1849 he patented it under the name Papier, JOB. JOB is well-known for it's advertising posters which feature art of beautiful women by artists such as Alphonse Mucha. Mucha's art nouveau late 1890s poster showing a sinuous long-haired goddess holding a rolled cigarette was inspired by Michelangelo's Sibyls from the Sistine Chapel, and proved to be so popular that it was sold as a lithograph. Today the brand is still produced by Republic Tobacco in Perpignan, France.
Artist: Jules Cheret
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French advertising poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had some creases and scuffs scattered in the image, with minor border wear. At some point either before or after it was backed, the poster acquired some tiny faint brown stains on the back of the linen and on the front of the poster. It can still be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or certainly, it could be re-backed.
