An Original Vintage Folded World War II Poster (measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Five Sullivan Brothers, the 1943 U.S. World War II (WWII) Navy poster ("The five Sullivan brothers 'missing in action' off the Solomons"; "They did their part") featuring a picture of the five brothers smiling. This was a famous tragic incident in World War II where five brothers served on the same Navy ship, and all were killed when the ship was sunk. The loss of the Sullivan Brothers resulted in the Armed Forces adopting a policy of not stationing brothers in the same unit or ship, and also a "sole survivor" policy (the last remaining sibling is automatically honorably discharged from service). In 1944, soon after the tragedy, a Hollywood movie was made based on the events called "The Sullivans", which was the 1944 Lloyd Bacon World War II (WWII) Naval romantic melodrama starring Anne Baxter, Thomas Mitchell, Selena Royle, Edward Ryan, Trudy Marshall, John Campbell, James Cardwell, John Alvin, George Offerman Jr., and Ward Bond. The movie was pulled from theaters quickly after it was made. 20th Century-Fox, which had produced the movie, tried to recoup some of the expenses by selling the rights to it after World War II ended, and it was re-released by Realart during the Korean War (with a new title, "The Fighting Sullivans"), but it did not do well. It is periodically shown on television, and it is REALLY hard to watch, especially if you know what happened before you watch it. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Note that we were just consigned a wonderful collection of 59 war posters, most from World War II (which we are auctioning in 59 separate auctions)! Included in this collection are some posters we have never auctioned before, and some we have only auctioned once or twice before (sometimes only many years ago). This is a wonderful opportunity to obtain some or all of these historic posters, many of which have great images!). Condition: good to very good. The poster has some separation in the edges of the upper horizontal fold and the top crossfold. There are some light oval-shaped creases along portions of the vertical foldline but otherwise it is in pretty nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
