Date Sold 9/15/2020 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 3 Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock romantic crime mystery thriller ("It's a web of romance and suspense that spins you from delight to danger - then spirals to an explosive climax on the fabulous Riviera!"; "Based on the novel by David Dodge"; "Screenplay by John Michael Hayes"; about a retired jewel thief living on the Riviera, and there is a string of daring jewel robberies, so naturally, he is the lead suspect, and he decides to find the true thief himself, and he is aided by a beautiful rich young woman and her mother!) starring Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis, John Williams, Charles Vanel, Brigitte Auber, Rene Blancard, Georgette Anys, and Jean Martinelli. Note that Cary Grant had announced his retirement from movies in 1953, but he was lured out of retirement by Hitchcock to make this one. Also note that Jessie Royce Landis, who had played Grant's mother in "North by Northwest", this time played his potential mother-in-law, and yet, she was only eight years older than Grant, who had aged very well! Important Added Info: Note that this is one of three different incomplete sets of lobby cards (each in their own auction) where the owner chose to have each of the cards linenbacked. This is not often done by collectors, but it is a reasonable way to improve the appearance of cards that need restoration, although many restorers nowadays paperback lobby cards instead. Please bear in mind that these cards have been linenbacked, and that there is a thin strip of excess linen around each edge of the card so while the cards measure 11" x 14" the cards plus the linen measure slightly larger. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. All three cards had some border defects and varying amounts of of scuffs in the image, and each card had darkened somewhat. Overall, each card was in "good to very good" condition prior to linenbacking. The cards were pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, so bear that in mind before bidding on these cards.
