An Original Vintage Folded One-Sheet Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) one of four John Wayne stock posters used by theaters to advertise re-released (and in some countries, the first release) John Wayne cowboy western movies that he made for Lone Star Pictures in 1933 and 1934. The first of these was made by Lone Star Pictures itself in 1934, and has an artwork image of a cowboy on a horse that does not resemble John Wayne. The second of these was made in 1939 when John Wayne achieved major stardom with Stagecoach, and distributors rushed to re-release his many 1930s B-westerns to theaters, and this poster shows a recognizable John Wayne on a rearing horse with an inset image in the top right corner. There are two other Lone Star stock John Wayne posters that we believe date to the mid 1940s, when he had even greater success with his World War II movies, and one has him standing full-length by a tree, and the other has a closer image of him along with Gabby Hayes. Important Added Info: Note that this is a "stock" poster created by Lone Star for use by theaters showing re-releases of their 1930s John Wayne movies in 1939. Theaters would order this poster, which had a specific title printed on John Wayne's credit at bottom. We have auctioned more than one of these with different 1930s titles at bottom. This poster has the title "Randy Rides Alone", which is the 1934 Harry Fraser cowboy western starring John Wayne (in the title role as Randy Bowers), Alberta Vaughn, George 'Gabby' Hayes, Yakima Canutt, and Earl Dwire Condition: fair. Many years ago (likely when the poster was first created), it was backed onto a thin linen and the linen was folded around the edges and sewed. This was done so that posters would last far longer than if they were unbacked, and that is almost surely true in this case, because the poster would likely have separated on the folds and been thrown out. The poster has survived because of the linen, but there is paper loss at the crossfolds and creases, scuffs and small tears on the folds. There is a foreign stamp in the bottom center. The poster can be removed from the old linen and properly rebacked but bear all the above in mind before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
