An Undated (probably 1931) Re-Release Theatrical Unfolded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Civilization, the classic 1916 Thomas H. Ince silent anti-war religious fantasy melodrama ("Thos H. Ince's Million Dollar Spectacle"; "The Greatest Production of Modern Times"; it is an allegory about a king in an unnamed country, who has a submarine, and he orders the count in charge of it to sink an enemy ship, and the count refuses, and sinks the submarine instead, and he survives, but in limbo between life and death, where he meets Jesus in the flesh, who tells him to return to the living and preach peace, which he does, and that causes him to be sentenced to death, but then Jesus appears again!; it has been suggested that this film helped to get Woodrow Wilson re-elected as president because it reinforced his campaign promises to keep the United States out of World War I) starring Howard C. Hickman, Enid Markey, Lola May, Kate Bruce, J. Frank Burke, and George Fisher NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release posters from this classic 1916 anti-war movie are beyond rare (we have only ever seen the wonderful one-sheet from it), and we have auctioned that same poster twice, but otherwise, we have never auctioned any first release item. In1931, the American Trading Association re-released this movie. We have auctioned the one-sheet from that release one time, and many lobby cards, but no other posters. Now we have been consigned a wonderful unfolded half-sheet from the 1931 release, which has a completely different image from both the first release and re-release one-sheets, and it even has an image of Jesus, the Prince of Peace! Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has tears, tiny paper loss, and darkening around the edges, but it is solely in the blank borders, and the image area is in pretty nice condition. After a simple backing, the poster will look fantastic, and only have border restoration. Learn More about condition grades
