Les bas-fonds (released in the U.S. in 1937 as "Lower Depths"), the 1936 Jean Renoir French romantic crime melodrama (based on the play by Maxim Gorky; about a wealthy man who loses his money and goes to live in the slums of Paris and he watches the lives of those around him, including a romance between a young man and a young woman) starring Jean Gabin, Suzy Prim, Louis Jouvet, Jany Holt, Vladimir Sokoloff, and Robert Le Vigan. Note that this movie was re-made in 1957 by Akira Kurosawa as "Donzoko", and both adaptations are excellent movies!
