An Autographed Letter (measures 8" x 10 3/4" [20 x 27 cm]) (Learn More) Stan Laurel (born Arthur Stanley Jefferson) was an actor from the 1910s to the 1950s. He, along with his partner Oliver Hardy, is best remembered as part of the great comedy team "Laurel and Hardy". He had a solo career in the early 1920s, but in 1926, he joined with Hardy (who had been a major star in the mid 1910s), and they made many legendary movies, including Sons of the Desert, Way Out West, Big Business, Helpmates, The Music Box, Tit for Tat, Towed in a Hole, Them Thar Hills, and Liberty. He passed away in 1965 at the age of 74. In 2019, a film biography, "Stan & Ollie", starring John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan, was released, and while it did what most film biographies did, which is to play fast and loose with the truth, it was generally very well received and one can only hope it will cause new generations to seek out this classic duo's wonderful movies (both features and shorts)! Important Added Info: Note that this letter has been personally autographed (signed) by Stan Laurel! Note that this is from a collection we were consigned that all came from a man named Ernest Hack, who wrote to celebrities during the 1930s and 1940s. Most of them are entirely handwritten by the celebrities, and while our consignor does not have a certificate of authenticity, we feel certain they are all authentic. There is an interesting added story to this letter. We first listed it together with a number of other letters to Ernest Hack, and a Laurel & Hardy collector contacted us to say that he had doubts about the letter because it had a PO Box return address where all the letters he was aware of used Laurel's street address. Because the auction was about to end, we closed the auction, knowing we could relist it after further research. We contacted a Laurel & Hardy expert who told us that he feels certain that the letter is authentic and entirely handwritten by Stan Laurel. That expert put us in touch with another L&H expert who agrees that it is authentic (even the yellow-with-blue-borders stationery matches other letters from Stan). The second expert also gave a possible explanation for the PO Box. Stan re-married his 2nd wife Virginia Ruth Rogers in January of 1941, but they had separated by the end of May. During that summer, there were plans for Laurel & Hardy to make films in Mexico city which didn't come to fruition, instead they made the film Great Guns for Fox. In early November, Stan & Ollie went on the Flying Showboat tour (along with other stars) of Pacific military bases for two weeks. In January of 1942, they embarked on a second tour called the Hell-a-Belloo tour. So, with all this time away from home and separated from his wife, it would not be surprising that he had a PO Box to collect his mail. There is one other oddity to the letter. Laurel writes in it that he was born in 1900, June 16th, but actually, he was born ten years earlier on June 16! We would think the most likely answer for this is that back in 1941, when there were no computers, there was no quick way to find out someone's actual age, and one could well imagine the 51 year old Stan Laurel wanting to shave 10 years off his life with the stroke of a pen, especially because he was still active in movies! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction.
