eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result h005 LETTER TO STUDIOS REQUESTING 'NEGRO' CREDITS '46 Date Sold 9/27/2005Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 3 Original Vintage Letters (measure 8 1/2" x 11") (Learn More) a set of letters (including the original draft and secretary's note of whom to send it to) from 1946 sent by Ben Shylen (founder of Boxoffice magazine, the leading magazine sent to theater owners to tell them what movies were coming out) requesting that studios credit "Negro" or black African American actors in upcoming movies (even if they had very minor parts) in their advertising materials so that theaters with primarily black audiences could attract more ticket sales since their patrons will know which movies include black actors/actresses! Note that we know that the studios ignored Mr. Shylen's very reasonable request, because it is extremely difficult to find any movie paper that credits black performers of the late 1940s and 1950s, even when they are NOT in very minor roles. It wasn't until the Civil Rights Movement that studios began to fully credit black performers on an equal basis with white performers. Condition: very good. Learn More about condition grades
