A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 39" x 59 1/2" [99 x 151 cm]) (Learn More) L'Olympienne (literally translates to "The Olympian"), the 1890s French advertising poster (with a tagline that translates to "New lighting recommended by medical authorities") promoting the purchase of L'Olympienne lamp oil, and featuring artwork of a woman (perhaps a female version of Prometheus) holding a torch which sheds light on people from all corners of the world, with Greek gods in the sky above. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French advertising poster! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 39" x 59 1/2" [99 x 151 cm]. Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster had small tears and tiny paper loss on parts of the folds and some paper loss in the top corners, extending into the edge of the image in the top right corner. It had paper loss scattered down the right blank border, but fortunately, it did not extend into the image. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was mounted to a thin linen with no restoration. It could be removed from the thin linen and properly backed and restored, but bear all of the above in mind before bidding.
