Prisoner of Japan, the 1942 Arthur Ripley & Edgar Ulmer World War II (WWII) South Pacific tropical island military propaganda melodrama ("They foiled the beasts of Nippon and found the secret weapon that was dooming American convoys."; set on a small tropical island in the South Pacific, and two Americans there discover a Japanese agent has a short wave radio that he is using to help the Japanese attack American ships) starring Gertrude Michael, Alan Baxter, Ernst Deutsch (billed as "Introducing Ernest Dorian"), Corinna Mura, and Tom Seidel. Note that the behind-the-scenes information about this movie is far more interesting than the movie itself! It is based on a story by Edgar Ulmer, and supposedly he produced and co-directed it, but if so, he was completely uncredited and it has not been confirmed. More interesting is the "Japanese" agent, who is played by Ernst Deutsch. He was a noted German stage and screen actor who was born in 1890, and in 1933, he fled Germany because he had some Jewish ancestry. He worked in Europe for several years before settling in the U.S. in 1938. He appeared in several movies in minor roles, and then he was hired to be the main bad guy in this movie, which is incredibly odd, because the bad guy is Japanese, and Deutsch was German! They renamed him "Ernest Dorian", and put "introducing" on the posters, which was ridiculous. He went on to play many German villains in World War II movies, and had a significant role in The Third Man. After that, he returned to Germany and passed away in 1969 at the age of 78.
