eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 3t0145 AT THE CIRCUS WC 1939 wonderful different Al Hirschfeld Marx Brothers art, ultra rare! Date Sold 2/14/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 20" [36 x 51 cm]) (Learn More) At the Circus, the 1939 Edward Buzzell musical circus screwball comedy ("Keep the world laughing!") starring The Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Kenny Baker, Florence Rice, Eve Arden, Margaret Dumont, Nat Pendleton, Fritz Feld, and Charles Gemora (as Gibraltar the gorilla). Note that this was the movie where the Marx Brothers sing the song "Lydia the Tattooed Lady"! Also note that MGM initially was going to call this movie "A Day at the Circus" (to capitalize on the success of "A Day at the Races"), but that title was dropped (although it is on a few stills). There was a working title of "Marx Bros At the Circus" that is also on some stills, but not the 1939 posters or lobby cards. To make things confusing, when MGM re-released the movie in 1962, the advertising made it look like the title of the movie was "Marx Bros At the Circus". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Al Hirschfeld Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this window card, which has wonderful different art of the Marx Brothers! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 20" [36 x 51 cm]. Condition: fair. The bottom 2" of the card was trimmed off, which affects small taglines, the bottom of the credits, and the bottom of Chico's image. We can supply the buyer a complete image of this card from the pressbook only, because we have never before auctioned this card. Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this window card, but we don't know that one exists, and other than the trimming and darkening down the left 1", the card is in pretty nice condition. Of course, a talented restorer can repair this card and replace the missing bottom area (or not), but know that our image of the complete window card from the pressbook is small, and there is no way a restorer can read the small writing in the credits and taglines, so without the winning bidder finding a complete example to work from, they can't fully restore the bottom. SO BEAR ALL OF THE ABOVE IN MIND BEFORE BIDDING ON THIS EXTREMELY RARE WINDOW CARD! Learn More about condition grades
