An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Japanese Movie Poster (measures approximately 20" x 28 1/2") (Learn More) Viridiana, the 1961 (released in the U.S. in 1962) Luis Bunuel Mexican/Spanish religious Catholic church nun romantic melodrama ("We've got nothing to hide..."; "You may not like Viridiana. You may very well hate it. You may find it too shocking. But this, we guarantee... Viridiana will strike your senses like nothing else you have seen in a theatre!"; about a nun that opens up a house for the unfortunate, but the people she helps don't turn out to be very grateful; the film was the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix winner) starring Silvia Pinal (in the title role as Viridiana), Francisco Rabal, Fernando Rey, Jose Calvo, and Margarita Lozano. Note that Bunuel was invited back to Spain to make this film after decades of working abroad. The script was approved by the Spanish authorities with a few minor changes, but they had no opportunity to view the finished film before it played at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d'Or. It was quickly denounced by the Vatican and banned in Spain for 17 years! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: This Japanese poster measures approximately 20" x 28 1/2". Note that this poster has been paperbacked. This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster was in nice condition prior to linenbacking with only the most minor of border wear, and a few tiny scuffs in the image. It was nicely linenbacked and looks great!
