An Original Vintage Linenbacked One-Sheet Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

West Side Story, the classic 1961 Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins (winners of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) New York City romantic dance musical ("The screen achieves one of the great entertainments in the history of motion pictures"; "'Best Picture' Winner of 10 Academy Awards 1961"; "Based upon the stage play produced by Robert E. Griffith and Harold S. Prince" winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; with a sentimental script by Ernest Lehman, which borrows heavily from "Romeo & Juliet"; based on a book by Arthur Laurents) starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), and George Chakiris (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film). The wonderful music was by Leonard Bernstein and the equally wonderful lyrics were by Stephen Sondheim. Note that Natalie Wood's singing was dubbed by Marni Nixon (who had also dubbed The King and I and The Sound of Music), and Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed as well. Recordings exist of some of Natalie Wood's singing, and she absolutely would have been fine, but Hollywood demands perfection!

Important Added Info: Note that the posters for this classic movie are incredibly confusing, and this poster makes things even more confusing, which could probably fill a book with all its complexities! To re-cap, there was a "pre-Academy Awards" poster in 1961. After the Academy Awards were held, many of these original release posters had a small square paper snipe added, noting that it won the Best Picture Academy Award (oddly, there was NOT a "post-Awards" one-sheet created with the artwork in 1962). Then, in 1963, posters were printed with the original art, and with the "Best Picture" box, and with the original NSS number in the bottom right and stamped on the back, but with a 1963 litho number (apparently they re-used the same plates, and added the box and the new litho number to them). Why they did this is beyond us, because, as long as they were changing the litho number, they could easily have changed the NSS number as well. If anyone reading this has a "post-Awards" West Side Story one-sheet with a 1961, 1962, or 1963 NSS and/or litho number, please let us know, so we can increase our knowledge of this very unusual poster printing situation!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds, with an extra horizontal fold just below the regular bottom one. The bottom 2" of the poster was folded back at one time. It had tape stains in the corners and in the center of each border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
