A 1949 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 55" x 78" [140 x 198 cm]) (Learn More) Tales of Manhattan, the 1942 Julien Duvivier New York City all-star compilation musical comedy ("'It's as thrilling as New York's skyline!' says Walter Winchell... 'with a story to match the brilliance of its stars!' An experience you'll Never forget!"; "A story as thrilling as its stars!") starring Charles Boyer, Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton, Edward G. Robinson, Paul Robeson (in his final film), Ethel Waters, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, "plus 46 featured players" including Thomas Mitchell, Eugene Pallette, Cesar Romero, Gail Patrick, Roland Young, Elsa Lanchester, George Sanders, George Reed, James Gleason, and the Hall Johnson Choir. Note that W.C. Fields starred in a chapter from this compilation film, but it was cut before the movie was released. As far as we know, Fields is not credited or shown on any movie paper for this film. The cut chapter was restored in a 1996 video re-release NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Averardo Ciriello Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this 1949 re-release Italian two-panel before! Why is it a 1949 re-release rather than a first release? Because the IMDb says this movie was first released in Italy in 1945. However, we can find no poster from that supposed first release. This poster is dated 1949, and is the only Italian poster from that release we have ever auctioned. It is possible that the IMDb is wrong, or it is possible that the 1945 release was at a festival or some very limited release, or it may be that the 1945 posters are so incredibly rare that none have surfaced! Therefore, we are putting this poster as being from a 1949 re-release, but we can't say for certain. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster had tiny paper loss at just a few crossfolds and a very few creases, scuffs, and tiny tears on parts of some folds. It had some faint scuffs scattered in the yellow letters of the title. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
