Though America had not joined the war at that point, many realized that it was inevitable and military recruitment was a top priority in the early 1940s. Note that most don't realize that America's aerial warfare service was actually part of the U.S. Army at first. It was established in 1926 as the United States Army Air Service and later renamed to United States Army Air Corps. The Air Corps became the United States Army Air Forces in June of 1941 and they were given greater autonomy from the Army's command structure.
