Note that when AIDS gripped the world in 1981, local authorities, healthcare providers and governments quickly created health posters as a way to inform people about the new disease. These public health campaigns continue to this day, and the posters show the different tactics, images (some quite provocative) and messages used by various countries and health agencies in their attempts to educate people about the AIDS/HIV threat. Kenya has the joint fourth-largest HIV epidemic in the world (alongside Mozambique and Uganda) with 1.6 million people living with HIV in 2016. 1 In the same year, 36,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses, while this is still high it has declined steadily from 64,000 in 2010.
