(Learn More) The Rebel, the 1933 Curtis Bernhardt, Edwin H. Knopf, & Luis Trenker German Napoleonic War thriller (about a young medical student who returns to his Tyrolean home to find out that Napoleon's troops have taken over the area and that his mother and sister have been murdered) starring Vilma Banky, Luis Trenker, Victor Varconi, Luise Ullrich, Olga Engl, Erika Dannhoff, Ludwig Stossel, Arthur Grosse, Fritz Kampers, and Reinhold Bernt. This was an English version of "Der Rebell", made by Deutsche Universal-Film in 1932 (but this was not released until 1933). Universal did the same thing with "Dracula" in 1931. They filmed the movie twice, once in English, and once in Spanish, with two entirely different casts, U.S. actors for the English version and mostly Latin actors for the Spanish version, obviously for release in Spanish speaking countries, and the same was done with this movie, except it was released in German and English (the German language version starred Luis Trenker and Luise Ullrich). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that star/director Luis Trenker is a fascinating forgotten man in the history of film! He started out helping Arnold Fanck on his mountain movies. He became a filmmaker in the 1930s, making movies about how country life was better than city life, and the Nazis wanted him to make movies for them. He moved to Rome and made two documentaries there. After the war, he was accused of being a Fascist, but the charges were eventually dropped and he started making movies again, but before long, he only made documentaries and writing about mountains, his first love. He died at the age of 97 in 1990! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1932 movie paper from this Universal movie is incredibly rare. We have only sold a single lobby card from this movie until we received this pressbook! Also note that pressbooks were prepared prior to a movie being released. Often, changes would be made in a movie advertising campaign (billing of actors, different images, etc.), and the theaters would print up special supplements that they would send out with the pressbooks that had already been printed. These supplements are very rare, far more rare than the pressbooks themselves! Some pressbooks would have no supplements, some would have one, and some would have several. Also note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook, and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: very good, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It measured quite large, and it was folded over twice, but otherwise, it is in pretty nice condition (see our images).
