An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Dinner at Eight, the classic 1933 George Cukor New York City high society romantic comedy ("Greatest entertainment ever offered by stage or screen"; "From the Sam H. Harris stage play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber"; about a rich couple who throw a dinner for a group of very different New York society types, and young Jean Harlow steals the show as the trophy girlfriend of rich Wallace Beery) starring Marie Dressler, John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Jean Harlow, Lee Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Edmund Lowe, Billie Burke, Madge Evans, Jean Hersholt, Karen Morley, and Phillips Holmes. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", re-titled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1934 movie posters from this classic MGM all-star movie are incredibly rare. The only first release posters we have ever auctioned from this movie were two examples of this same half-sheet (and both of those were in much lesser condition than this example), and otherwise, we have never auctioned any other first release poster. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster's top, right, and bottom blank borders were trimmed off. There were creases, stains, and smudges around the edges, with some pinholes and tears in the left border, and a few pinholes, smudges, and faint stains scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
