An Original 1948 (from the first Japanese release of this movie) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Japanese "B3" or "Nakazuri" Movie Poster (14x20; measures approximately 14" x 20") (Learn More) W. Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge, the 1946 Edmund Goulding romantic love triangle melodrama ("Produced by Darryl F. Zanuck"; "From the Novel by W. Somerset Maugham"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a dashing young man who breaks off his engagement and goes off to travel the world and "find himself", and he returns ten years later and his former fiancee wants to win him back, even though she is married to another man) starring Tyrone Power Jr., Gene Tierney, John Payne, Anne Baxter (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Clifton Webb (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Herbert Marshall (as W. Somerset Maugham), Fritz Kortner, and Cecil Humphries (as the Holy Man) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that, immediately after World War II, the U.S. occupied Japan, and many American movies were shown in the late 1940s. All of the Japanese posters we have seen from that period have a "Motion Picture Export Association" circular printed logo on the poster, and this only seems to be on these late 1940s posters. Since there were many U.S. servicemen in Japan at this time, these posters have the title written in both Japanese and in English, and they are from the first Japanese release. What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction was well linenbacked, but the restorer likely did not attempt to make the poster look "perfect". You may still see some slight evidence of the restoration and/or the defects when you look at the poster from inches away. But the poster now looks quite nice, and I think most collectors would be extremely happy to display this poster on their wall. In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. It had pinholes in the corners and some small tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
