Date Sold 11/12/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Movie Lobby Card (11x14; LC; printed in Spanish in the U.S. for Spanish-speaking audiences; measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Tarzan, the Ape Man, the 1932 W.S. Van Dyke jungle adventure action melodrama ("The thrill of thrills!"; "The producers of 'Trader Horn' have again brought out of the African jungle another great romantic thriller!"; "Based upon the Characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs") starring Johnny Weissmuller (in the title role as Tarzan), Neil Hamilton, Maureen O'Sullivan (as Jane), C. Aubrey Smith, Doris Lloyd, Ray Corrigan, Jack Leonard (both as uncredited apes!) and Cheetah (played by an uncredited chimpanzee). Note that Crash Corrigan and Jack Leonard both made a REALLY wise investment in the 1930s, when they acquired "gorilla suits". In many of the movies in the 1930s and 1940s where there is a fake gorilla, it is played by either Crash Corrigan or Jack Leonard, no doubt because they could supply the suits! Of course, this was one of the most successful "franchises" in movie history, with several sequels with Weissmuller and O'Sullivan, and then more movies with just Weissmuller alone (after O'Sullivan left the franchise), and then other actors took up the lead role many different times! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card was printed in the United States for use at theaters with Spanish speaking audiences (this was done most by MGM, starting in the 1930s, but it was done by the other major studios as well, and often the posters would have the exact same image as the English language poster, except the writing would be in Spanish, and often there would be an added "Toda en Espanol!", meaning "Entirely in Spanish!", printed within the image). Condition: fair to good. The card had a 5" tear near the middle of the top border, extending down into the trees. There were two 3" tears in the right border. There were pinholes, tears, and areas of paper loss around the edges of the card and a pinhole and paper loss in O'Sullivan's hair, extending into the edge of her face. Someone linenbacked the card and performed restoration to the above defects, but you can see signs of the restoration and some of the defects. Learn More about condition grades
