An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 45 3/4" x 61 1/2" [116 x 156 cm]) (Learn More)

Les Liaisons Dangereuses (released in the U.S. in 1961 as "Dangerous Love Affairs", and under it's original title), the 1959 Roger Vadim French/Italian romantic melodrama ("Ooh-la-la! How French can the screen get?"; "Which affair was most dangerous? -At the ski lodge with Cecile? Oui! -At the beach with Marianne? Oui! -At home in Paris with his Own Wife? Whee!"; "Roger Vadim's uncut masterpiece - every controversial scene intact!"; "The picture with the famous 'bottoms up' scene!"; "oui... oui... whee!"; "Roger Vadim's uncut masterpiece that explores just how 'Franch' the screen can get!"; "Not recommended for the immature."; "Here is a motion picture of magnificent artistry and adult morality. Without question, it is the most successful film ever to be made in France. It is also the most controversial - and, many critics insist, the finest. It is an unusual work. It fascinates on many levels of perception. It will long be remembered for the excellence of its acting, for the subtlety of its direction, for the beauty of its photography, and above all, for the enthralling story that it tells."; "Based upon the famous novel by Choderlos De Laclos") starring Jeanne Moreau, Gerard Philipe, Annette Vadim, Madeleine Lambert, andJeanne Valerie.

Artist: Jean Mascii
Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this partially French movie! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards.
Note that this item (and others we are auctioning in this set of auctions) come to us from the estate of Lee Sanders. Mr. Sanders was a nationally recognized projectionist, film poster collector, and union activist who passed away earlier this year, and the net proceeds from the sale of his varied and eclectic collection will be donated to promote film studies at the Besant School of Happy Valley in Ojai, Ca.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had paper loss at several crossfolds and tears, paper loss, and stains on parts of some foldlines. There was a very large studio-issued snipe glued over the original title area and it was not glued on carefully, so there are many creases in the area of the snipe. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was backed onto a paper backing, with the slightest restoration. If I owned this cool poster, I would surely have it removed from the paper backing and properly linenbacked, but do not bid on this poster unless you can accept it as it is, or are willing to pay to have it re-backed.
