An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures 43" x 58 3/4"; known as a 'grande' poster in France) (Learn More) Flesh and the Devil, the 1926 Clarence Brown silent romantic love triangle melodrama ("From the novel The Undying Past by Hermann Sudermann"; about a man who becomes obsessed with a woman after just catching a glimpse of her; he doesn't see her for years and when he does, he enrages her husband, who challenges him to a duel, and he kills the husband, and is sent away; while he is gone, his best friend watches after the widow, and when he returns, he discovers his best friend has married her; he still can't resist her, and his friend catches him with his wife, and they agree to have a duel, but while they are about to shoot, they realize the absurdity of it, and throw down their guns and embrace, but the wife, who was coming to stop them, dies on the way!) starring John Gilbert, Greta Garbo, Lars Hanson, Barbara Kent, and William Orlamond. Note that it seems amazing in the present day to realize that John Gilbert was billed above the title in this movie and that Greta Garbo received much inferior second billing (equal to that of third billed Lars Hanson), but of course, this was Greta Garbo's first year in the U.S., and her third American movie, and John Gilbert was a major established star, so he fully deserved his much better billing! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: good to very good. The poster had creases and some small tears along some foldlines, with extra creases above and below the horizontal folds. There were many pinholes, creases, stains, and some small areas of surface paper loss in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer linenbacked the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (since many of them are in the borders, which would not show if the poster is framed, and certainly, any restorer could likely touch them up without re-backing the poster, or the poster could be completely re-backed, and after proper restoration, it would look magnificent, without much paint restoration in the image area). Note that the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen on the left and right sides of the poster (there is excess on the top and bottom). Learn More about condition grades
