Date Sold 6/16/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Shanghai Express, the 1932 Josef von Sternberg (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) China Asian railroad train romantic adventure thriller (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a group of passengers on a Chinese train bound for Shanghai; naturally, there are all sorts of different and memorable passengers, including Chinese revolutionaries, but none more memorable than the "Shanghai Lily", played of course by Dietrich) starring Marlene Dietrich, Clive Brook, Anna May Wong, Warner Oland, Eugene Pallette, Lawrence Grant, and Louise Closser Hale. Note that this was one of the seven movies that Dietrich made with director von Sternberg, and it is likely the best regarded, after "The Blue Angel" (which was the only one of the seven which was not a U.S. movie, because von Sternberg made it in Germany, in both languages). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1932 movie posters from this classic Josef von Sternberg/Marlene Dietrich movie are incredibly rare. We have only auctioned two half-sheets previously, and no other first release posters of any size (and either or both of those previous half-sheet sales might have been this exact same poster, and the last time was 14 years ago!)! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never machine folded, but it was folded by hand twice vertically (once down the left of Dietrich's hair and the other in the background between Dietrich and Brook, with both foldlines going through her shoulders). It had some other partial vertical creases scattered in the left and right of the poster, but not in the center. It had a few smudges and scuffs scattered throughout the image. It had some tears and paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. The person who backed the poster painted over the borders and white background area, to "even them out", but they wisely left alone the images of the stars (from any reasonable viewing distance, the poster displays quite well, and it is only from close-up that you see signs of the restoration and defects described above).
