An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Vertical British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Mabel's Lovers, the 1912 Mack Sennett silent romantic love triangle slapstick comedy short ("The surprised suitor"; about a woman who receives multiple marriage proposals at a summer resort; to test her suitors, she disguises her legs with wild, unsightly bumps, causing all but one admirer to retreat in disgust; the next day, appearing without the bumps, she is admired by all, but only the one who stayed wins her love!) starring Mabel Normand (in the title role as Mabel), Fred Mace, Ford Sterling, and Alice Davenport. Note that Mabel Normand was an actress/comedienne from the 1910s to the 1920s. She was a giant of early cinema, and the first great female movie comedienne, and she even pre-dated Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. She started with just a few movies in 1910, and she was mostly unbilled or low-billed in 1911, but in 1912 she became a leading star! Some of her shorts were named after her character and in 1912 she made this movie, where her character had her own name, and the movie was named after her, showing just how popular she had become. Also, note that this is an unauthorized remake of D.W. Griffith's The Gibson Goddess from 1909. Sennett used to work for Griffith and was sometimes "inspired" by Griffith's films. We have never auctioned even a single movie paper item from this movie until we were consigned this vertical British quad poster. Also note that few people know that in the early days of British quads, they were originally in a vertical format (but they measured 30" x 40", just as they continue to do throughout the years). This is because so few of them survive, almost surely because of the massive paper shortages in England during World War II! At some point in the 1950s, they changed orientation to be horizontal, and they have remained that way to the present day. Finally note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II English poster! Virtually no English posters survive from the 1940s or earlier, because during World War II there were many paper shortages resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! Finally that this poster was folded at one time, but it has been stored flat, and because it is somewhat fragile we are not refolding it and it will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. It has some light staining, creases and just a few small tears in parts of the borders. Otherwise it has survived in as good condition as one could hope, and it could be displayed as is, or it would be a very simple linenbacking. Learn More about condition grades
