An Original Vintage Theatrical Cloth Banner Movie Poster (measures 36" x 119 1/2" [91 x 304 cm]) (Learn More) The Phantom of the West, the 1930 D. Ross Lederman cowboy western serial ("An All-Talking Serial in 10 Thrilling Chapters"; written by Ford Beebe) starring Tom Tyler, ("with a great supporting cast including") William Desmond, Tom Santschi, Dorothy Gulliver, Joe Bonomo (famous strong man who vied with Charles Atlas for the "Most Perfect Man", he appeared in 32 movies, but like Atlas, his primary business was selling books and pamphlets telling how to acquire a body like his!), Tom Dugan, "and others" NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this cloth banner, and that was 21 years ago. That example has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned! Note that these banners started in the 1920s, and continued into the early 1940s. But due to their great size and the fragile nature of the cloth they were created on, very few survive from any year. In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned 14 of these, and only one of them was from the 1930s, THIS one! Condition: very good. As noted above, we have only auctioned 14 of these cloth banners over the years, and the one offered here is in about as nice condition as any of those others, and better than many (some of them had been restored and mounted on linen). The cloth material these banners were printed on often deteriorates badly over many years, and, when folded, often separates along the folds. The banner offered here has some small areas of staining around the edges of the banner (and some areas where the cloth is weakened). Because this banner was stored folded up, it has many creases and some discoloration along some of the folds, but that is true of almost all such surviving banners. Note that this banner (like almost all similar cloth banners) had metal grommets put in each corner. This was done when the banner was made, and it allowed theaters to easily hang the banner from nails or hooks without hurting the banner. But it should be noted that the corners of the poster were folded over prior to the grommets being inserted (probably because the grommets held better with two thicknesses of banner), but this means that you cannot lay the corners of the banner completely square. This is NOT a defect, as that is how the banner was made, and when people have gotten these banners linenbacked, they have the grommets removed and the part folded back is unfolded.
