An Original Vintage Theatrical Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22") (Learn More) Sonny, the 1922 Henry King silent World War I (WWI) mistaken identity family relationship romantic love triangle melodrama ("George V. Hobart's Drama of Motherless Manhood"; "From the play by George V. Hobart"; a really wild story of best friends who look incredibly alike, and they both enlist in World War I, and one of them is killed, and his dying wish is that his best friend go home and impersonate him, so his family won't be sad, including his blind mother and girlfriend, and amazingly, they seem to be fooled by the deception!) starring Richard Barthelmess (in a dual role, both as the title "Sonny" and his lookalike best friend!), Margaret Seddon, Pauline Garon, Lucy Fox, Herbert Grimwood, Patterson Dial, and Fred Nicholls. Note that it was a pretty common plot device in silent movies to not only have people meet their exact double, but also to then go on to impersonate them. I wonder if this happens much in real life! This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Condition: good to very good. The poster had been folded across the middle and there were creases along that foldline and smudges in the solid black background area. There were also pinholes, creases, tears, and some areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster and some creases, smudges, scuffs, and a few pinholes scattered throughout the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed by a talented restorer, who did not touch up many of the faint smudges and scuffs (and I agree with that decision, because to do so would have required lots of paint, which would have given the poster a "heavily restored" look, and I don't feel the smudges and scuffs are all that distracting, and they help establish that this is a genuine 87 year-old original poster!). Obviously, one would prefer to find an example of this window card that had no defects or restoration, but I do not know if another example of this card exists (or if it does, if the owner would consider parting with it!). This card has had expert restoration and displays nicely. Learn More about condition grades
