An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Out of the Past (released in other English-speaking countries as "Build My Gallows High"), the classic 1947 Jacques Tourneur romantic love triangle revenge crime film noir thriller ("A Man - Trying to run away from his past... A Woman - Trying to escape her future!" "'Don't try to get rid of me for another woman... ...it won't work!"'; based on the novel 'Build My Gallows High' by Daniel Mainwaring; a great story of a private investigator who is hired by a gangster to find his missing mistress, and he does so, but then he falls for her, and starts a romance with her, even though he knows he is likely signing his death warrant) starring Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, Kirk Douglas (in his third movie role!), Rhonda Fleming, Richard Webb, Steve Brodie, Dickie Moore, Virginia Huston, Paul Valentine, and Ken Niles NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that posters from this classic film noir movie have always been difficult to obtain, likely because the movie had a very quick re-release in 1953 (just six years after the first release) when Kirk Douglas had become a major star. In the early 1990s, we had three examples of the one-sheet, and we have had two inserts, but other than those, we have had no 1947 posters in the last 25 years! We have looked for other examples of this style B half-sheet, and we could only find one that had been auctioned anywhere! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had many creases scattered in the top 6" of the left and right of the poster. It had a 7" horizontal crease in the middle of the left of the poster. It had a few creases and many faint scuffs scattered in the bottom half, with some scuffs in the top half. There was a small tear in the background to the right of the "t" of "Robert" at top center. There were lots of tiny pinholes around the edges, with some tiny areas of paper loss. The left and right borders were folded back at one time. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did little restoration to the defects described above (mostly there was restoration paint applied to the blank borders). In spite of the poster's many defects, it can certainly be displayed and enjoyed as it is, because the many creases and scuffs within the image are not very distracting from a reasonable viewing distance (see our image). Certainly, a talented restorer could remove the poster from the linen and re-back it using modern techniques, and it is likely that the creases can be greatly diminished simply by flattening the poster. Please look closely at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this super rare and wonderful poster! Learn More about condition grades
