eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result n062 CARMEN JONES one-sheet movie poster '54 Dorothy Dandridge, Preminger Date Sold 3/6/2008Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (27" x 41") (Learn More) Carmen Jones, the 1954 Otto Preminger romantic love triangle musical ("Something Really New! Something Truly Different!"; "Books and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd"; a re-telling of Bizet's Carmen opera, with black African Americans in all the lead roles) starring Dorothy Dandridge (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Carmen Jones), Harry Belafonte, Pearl Bailey, Olga James, Joe Adams, Marilyn Horne (who provided the singing voice for Dandridge), and Marvin Hayes (who provided the singing voice for Joe Adams). Note that this was the first movie that Preminger hired Saul Bass to do the title treatment for, and he DID an image used on the cover of the pressbook, but he did NOT do any images for any of the U.S. posters. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked, but not in the usual way (which is an alternate form of restoration that is similar to linenbacking, but involves backing the poster onto Japanese rice paper). THIS poster HAS been mounted onto Japanese rice paper, but it appears that it was done so in preparation to having the poster linenbacked, but that (for unknown reasons) the owner of this poster did not have the job finished, so the poster has solely been mounted on thin Japanese rice paper. There also has been no restoration done to the poster (it would have been done after the poster and paper were mounted on linen). Any talented restorer could certainly go ahead and linenback this poster (either using the current rice paper, or re-backing the poster onto different rice paper first), and after proper linenbacking and restoration to the poster's defects, it will look great! But because the poster is currently mounted onto a thin rice paper, it is fragile, and of course, will need to be sent rolled in a tube (but the poster is somewhat protected by the extra 1" border of rice paper on all four sides). Please do not bid on this poster unless you have read the above carefully! Condition: good to very good. The poster was mounted on a thin Japanese rice paper . The poster has areas of paper loss in the top horizontal foldline and some tiny areas of paper loss at the bottom two crossfolds and on the other foldlines. There are some creases, tears, and tiny areas of paper loss in the borders. NO RESTORATION OF ANY KIND HAS BEEN DONE TO THIS POSTER! Any talented restorer could certainly go ahead and linenback this poster (either using the current rice paper, or re-backing the poster onto different rice paper first), and after proper linenbacking and restoration to the poster's defects, it will look great! Please do not bid on this poster unless you have read the above carefully! Learn More about condition grades
