Mankiewicz race relations crime film noir ("Is it a question... Or an answer"; "an entertainment with a great courageous theme reaching to new heights of screen dynamics with seven new conceptions of dramatic portrayal"; "Don't miss it!"; "All colored cast"; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck and Written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz & Lesser Samuels) starring Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Stephen McNally, Sidney Poitier (in his first major film), Mildred Joanne Smith (in her only movie appearance, as Poitier's wife), Harry Bellaver, Stanley Ridges, Dots Johnson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Francine Everett, Frederick O'Neal, and Davis Roberts NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Eric Nitsche Important Added Info: Note that Paul Rand, Erik Nitsche and Saul Bass worked on the campaign for this film. Having these three great artists designing the posters has caused much confusion as to "who did what" over the years! Luckily, the pressbook clearly shows which ones Paul Rand & Erik Nitsche worked on, and Bass historians have confirmed that he worked on the insert. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Also note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a very light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had some scuff marks scattered in the solid black background areas and pair of staple holes in the top center and bottom center. Overall, the lobby card was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The card was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
