An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Standee (measures 19" x 28" [48 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Ayds Reducing Plan, the circa 1950s weight-loss standee advertising a weight loss plan, featuring images of Hollywood stars endorsing this product, which was an "appetite-suppressant" candy. It was first made in 1937, and the business passed through many hands until 1956, when it was bought by the president of Purex, and he used his many celebrity friends to endorse the product, which caused sales to take off. The active ingredient was benzocaine, a numbing agent, and presumably, the idea was that it numbed your mouth if you ate it right before a meal, so you lost your appetite! In the 1970s and early 1980s, sales were great, as Americans got more conscious about their weight, but in the mid 1980s, when public awareness of the disease AIDS grew, that caused a problem for this brand, due to the phonetic similarity of the two names, and of course, also because many victims of AIDS lost great amounts of weight, so the irony of "lose weight with Ayds" became a major embarrassment. At first, the company tried to shrug it off, but soon they could see it was a real problem, and they changed the name to "Diet Ayds", but that didn't help, and it was taken off the market. Important Added Info: Note that this item needs to be shipped in a box, which might be a fairly small box, or might be a very large box. What is important for the bidders to know is that this item very likely CAN'T be combined with other purchases, because there would not be much savings if any, because this item will be in a box with substantial depth (because the item is "three-dimensional"), while other purchases will be in a flat package, and trying to combine them would likely damage this item. If you purchase multiple items like this (ones that need to be packed in a box), then they likely can be combined with each other (unless the resulting box is simply too large). So please bear in mind that this item likely must be sent separately in a box (the size and depth of the box will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it (so if you would pay $150 for the item, but the shipping is likely $100, then only bid $50 for the item). Condition: good to very good. The front of the standee has some scuff marks and smudges (see our image). It is otherwise in generally nice condition. Learn More about condition grades
