A 1953 Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Stock One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) the 1953 stock poster created by Columbia Pictures for use by theaters showing re-releases of cowboy western movies starring "Wild" Bill Elliot and Tex Ritter. Theaters would order these posters which had a large blank area. Sometimes the studio would overprint the stock poster with the title of a specific movie, and sometimes they were sent a series of large paper snipes with the titles of specific entries of the series, so the theater could paste in each snipe as needed, thus getting many posters for the price of one. Sometimes stock posters are found with blank snipe areas. Most collectors consider them more valuable with a printed snipe attached, or with an overprinted snipe area. Artist: Glenn Cravath Important Added Info: Note that Wild Bill Elliott and Tex Ritter made several westerns together, and they were quite popular in the 1940s. In the 1940s, Columbia created a stock three-sheet and one-sheet poster, and they left a rectangle without a title in the lower right, and then they overprinted one-sheets with the titles of specific westerns with Elliott and Ritter. This particular one-sheet was overprinted with the title "Prairie Gunsmoke". Note that the poster says "A COLUMBIA REPRINT" in the bottom of the title box. This was a terminology used by Columbia Pictures at this time for some re-releases, and it has caused some collectors to be confused! This poster is the original poster from an undated 1940s re-release of this movie, and is NOT a "reprint"! What IS linenbacking?
