An Undated (probably 1960s) Re-Release (re-titled "The Face of the Cat" for this re-release) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) La Chatte (released in the U.S. in 1959 as "The Cat"), the 1958 Henri Decoin French World War II (WWII) romantic military suspense melodrama ("based upon the novel by Jacques Remy") starring Francoise Arnoul, Bernhard Wicki (billed as "Bernard Wicki"), Roger Hanin, Kurt Meisel, Harold Wolff (billed as "Harold Wolf"), Andre Versini, and Bernard Blier. Note that this movie was given a U.S. "arthouse" release by "Essex Universal", likely in 1959. That was a very limited release, and the only movie paper we have seen from it are duotone lobby cards, and the one-sheet from that release may have been duotone as well. In the early 1960s, this movie was released in the U.S. by MGM as part of a huge trade package with European distributors, and MGM printed full-color posters and lobby cards, with the new title of "The Face of the Cat". Those MGM posters and lobby cards are technically re-releases, but they are from the first wide U.S. release of this movie. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a poster or lobby card that was printed by MGM for a European movie that they distributed in the U.S.. Somewhere in the early 1960s, MGM apparently made a huge "trade" deal with European movie distributors. From the early 1960s to the late 1960s, MGM released 100 or more non-U.S. movies in the U.S. under the MGM logo (some dating back to the 1950s), and in return, they apparently gave 100 or more MGM movies (from the 1950s and early 1960s) to those European distributors to release in Europe. All of the posters from both sets of releases have a very similar type of somewhat garish, very colorful artwork, and some have an MGM logo that is different from than on other MGM movies of the same time period, which makes it likely that those (with different logos) are from re-releases. None of these posters (except for the very first few of them) have any dates on them. Over the years, I have seen many of these posters (from both types) sold as first release, but, as stated above, some of these are mid to late 1960s re-releases, and the ones from U.S. movies are "international" posters (or lobby cards) that were used in non-U.S. countries. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
