HYDE 8x10 LC '20 great image of John Barrymore as evil Mr. Hyde! Date Sold 5/3/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Lobby Card (Learn More) Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the classic 1920 John S. Roberson silent horror thriller ("By Robert Louis Stevenson") starring John Barrymore ("The Screen's Greatest Actor in a Tremendous Story of Man at His Best and Worst"; in the title roles), Martha Mansfield, Brandon Hurst, Charles Lane, and Cecil Clovelly. Note that there were several obscure silent movies based on this classic story starting in 1908. In 1920, Barrymore starred in this version, and there was a different English language version made that same year, and also a German language version, and all three movies had different casts and producers! Also note that Barrymore performed the initial transformation scene into Mr. Hyde without special effects! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that original 1920 movie paper of any sort from this movie is unbelievably rare! In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned a glass slide, and several magazines that contained ads for this movie. Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them. Condition: good. There is paper loss in the corners and stains and tiny dot stains around the edges. There are tiny dot stains scattered in the image (see our super-sized image). In spite of its defects, this card can be displayed and enjoyed just as it is, and certainly, a talented restorer could make it look wonderful (and it is quite possible that the stains could be partially or completely removed through chemical means). But please bear in mind the condition of this card before placing a bid! Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
