An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum, the 1940 Lynn Shores Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("Death strikes four times in 18 eerie minutes"; "Death in the electric chair faces Charlie Chan...at the hands of a murderer twelve years dead!"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Sidney Toler (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Victor Sen Yung (as Jimmy Chan; billed as "Sen Yung"), C. Henry Gordon, Marc Lawrence, Joan Valerie, Marguerite Chapman, Ted Osborne (billed as "Ted Osborn"), and Charles Wagenheim. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! We have only previously auctioned a one-sheet and a half-sheet from this movie (and NO other U.S. posters, only lobby cards and a few stills) until we received this insert! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had paper loss in the top right corner that extended into the brown background, with pinholes and tape stains in the other three corners and a few pinholes and smudges around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that the restorer left a tiny bit of excess linen around all four sides of the poster (they left a small border in order to protect the poster from handling damage, but they did not leave a larger border, to allow it to more easily fit in a frame).
