A Linenbacked German Special Poster (measures 28 1/2" x 38 1/4" [72 x 97 cm]) (Learn More)

Automobil Rennen (literally translates to "Automobile Race"), the 1921 German poster promoting a car and motorcycle race which was held on Sunday, May 22nd at the Opel-Rennbahn (Opel Racetrack) near the city of Russelsheim, Germany. The race was sponsored by the Hessiescher Automobil Club and Wiesbadener Automobil Club. This poster features Borntraeger art of two speeding cars. Note that Opel Automobile GmbH is a German automobile manufacturer which was founded in 1862 by Adam Opel (it was originally a sewing machine company). They began construction on the Opel-Rennbahn after World War I (WWI) and although it was primarily designed as a test track for Opel, the first race was held in 1920. It proved to be very popular and up to 50,000 spectators at a time attended the events. Unfortunately, the opening of the AVUS and Nurburgring tracks reduced the popularity of Opel-Rennbahn, and the last races were held there in the 1930s. Eventually, the grandstands were demolished and today the track has been almost completely overgrown.
Artist: Borntraeger
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German poster!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had minor wear on the folds. It had some smudges and stains around the edges, with a few creases and scuffs scattered throughout the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. It was backed onto a thin linen with no excess, and likely after it was backed, it acquired to brown stains in the right blank border (see our image).
