Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Six-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 81" x 81") (Learn More)

The Bell Boy, the 1918 Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle silent hotel comedy short starring Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle (in the title role), Buster Keaton (also playing a bellboy!), Al 'Fuzzy' St. John, Alice Lake, and Joe Keaton. Note that this was one of 17 movies that Fatty Arbuckle starred in that also had appearances by Buster Keaton, who had not yet reached major fame (he was not billed or pictured on almost all posters from these 17 movies).

Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).

The poster had a large area of paper loss in the top left of the image background. It was approximately 6" x 12". Fortunately, it was almost entirely unimportant background area! It included the tip of Arbuckle's foot, and otherwise was the background (the end of the staircase and the wall at the bottom of the stairs). There was another area of paper loss right near the center of the poster that was roughly oval in shape in Arbuckle's shirt. Again, it is very fortunate that the missing area was almost completely white area between the buttons of his shirt, and his head was not affected. There were areas around the edges of the poster where the poster had darkened (these areas were the "MOUNT-AR" at the top of the poster, the upper right corner of the image background, the "CKLE" of "ARBUCKLE" at lower right, and the "BEL" of "BELL" at bottom center). There were some small areas of paper loss at crossfolds, but again nothing in significant areas. I gave this poster to Studio C. They expertly recreated the missing areas, and I doubt few collectors could tell where they were! They lightened the darkened areas around the edges, and touched them up. While this poster obviously has real restoration, little of it is in important areas, and it now looks great! I suppose one could wait to find a better example of this poster, but one might end up waiting the rest of their life for that to happen!
