An Original Vintage Comic Book (measures approximately 7 1/8" x 10 1/4") (Learn More)

The Crypt of Terror was an EC Comics (E.C. Comics) horror comic book series from 1950. In 1950, EC publisher Gaines and his editor Al Feldstein discovered they shared similar tastes in horror and began experimenting with horror tales in their Crime Patrol comic series. With issue #17, the title changed from Crime Patrol to The Crypt of Terror. Due to an attempt to save money on second-class postage permits, the numbering did not change with the title and continued as The Crypt of Terror for the next two issues before switching to Tales From the Crypt with issue #20. So there were three issues with the name "The Crypt of Terror", #17-19. At the beginning of 1955, Bill Gaines was going to add a fourth horror title, and he decided to name it "The Crypt of Terror", and the first issue was all set for publication. But this was at the time of the Senate investigation, and Gaines realized he could not publish a new title, so he instead published the comic as the last issue of Tales From the Crypt (#46). 18 years later, Ron Barlow and Bruce Hershenson published the issue as their first East Coast Comics reprint, and the original title was restored, so it finally saw publication as was intended in 1955! This was one of the EC comic titles published by Bill Gaines (William Gaines) through his company, EC Comics (E.C. Comics), which he inherited from his father in 1947. Since the ending of publication, all of the EC comics have been reprinted many, many times, in many formats, and there have been several movies and TV series based on them!
Artist: Johnny Craig
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this comic book! It has the name "Johnny Craig" written in the top center, and we would think that this surely means that he personally autographed it, but we have no documentation. We can't see why anyone would fake an autograph on a valuable comic book, but please do not bid on this assuming it is surely an authentic autograph. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Contents: Cover art by Johnny Craig. The Maestro's Hand, script and art by Al Feldstein; Dr. Hellman arrives at a cabin in the woods to forget the suicide of his ex-fiancee after he unnecessarily removed the injured piano hand of her lover and he killed himself. The Living Corpse, script by Al Feldstein, art by Wally Wood; A magician strikes his assistant while wearing a snake ring and then attempts to locate where her body was taken by playing dead himself as to remove the snake imprint evidence. Mute Witness To Murder!, art by Johnny Craig. 36 pgs. $0.10. Cover price $0.10.

Please note that we don't use a "comic guide" grading system, and OUR grading scale is completely different from standard comic book grading. Our "very good" is completely different from a comic book graded "very good". Note that this comic book will be sent to the winning bidder in a brand new Mylite4 protective sleeve and a full-back 100% acid-free backing board.

Note: We have 20 images of this comic book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 20 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 10.

Note that due to the greater interest in this comic we have pictured EVERY single page of this comic, which means that you can see EVERY defect the comic has, AND get a good sense of its condition. While we gave the comic an overall condition grade (and sometimes describe the defects in words) please rely on the actual images of the comic to help you decide what YOU think its condition is, and then bid or not bid based on what you are seeing in the images. And if you have ANY doubt as to what the condition of the comic is, or whether you want it in the condition it is is, then please do not bid, as we do not want any retracted bids or returns if at all possible. If in doubt, do not bid!.

Condition: poor to fair, with old restoration. The comic is missing a diagonal portion of the last interior page that measures approximately 3" x 6" at its widest points (included with the comic is a photocopy of what the complete final interior page looks like). It also has the name "Johnny Craig" written on the cover, which we think is an autograph (see above). It had some tears around the edges of the cover and separation of the covers, and someone long ago taped the covers together from the inside and also used tape on the cover tears to "restore" them and also did touch up in those areas. The comic has very substantial defects, so please do not bid on it unless you have read the above and looked at all of our images.
