An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #1 (Curse of the Scorpion) Movie Herald (measures 7" x 10" [18 x 25 cm]; 1 page) (Learn More)

Adventures of Captain Marvel, the 1941 John English & William Witney comic book superhero fantasy serial ("A Republic Serial in 12 Chapters"; "Based on the character in WHIZ COMICS Magazine" by C.C. Beck; about the boy who becomes a superhero when he says "Shazam" and he fights a mysterious masked villain called "The Scorpion") starring Tom Tyler (in the title role as Captain Marvel), Frank Coghlan Jr. (as Billy Batson, Captain Marvel's youthful alter ego), Louise Currie, William 'Billy' Benedict, Robert Strange, Kenne Duncan, Stanley Price, and John Davidson. Note that no one is credited as playing the lead masked villain, "The Scorpion" but IMDb notes that Gerarld Mohr voiced The Scorpion (uncredited). Note that Republic Pictures had tried to make a deal with DC Comics to make serials of Superman and Batman in 1940, but they could not agree on a deal, and in fact a lawsuit resulted. So instead they made a deal with Whiz Comics and made this serial in 1941, and the serial "Spy Smasher" in 1942 (and DC Comics signed with Columbia Pictures in 1943, and made their Batman and Superman serials there!). So this was the very first of the many "live action" movies based on the costumed super heroes, and, likely because it was released at the start of America's involvement in World War II, and there were paper drives over the next few years, original 1941 movie paper on this title is EXTREMELY rare!

Important Added Info: Note that this is one of the most unusual heralds we have EVER seen! Often, theaters would make unusual die-cut heralds, sometimes in the shapes of common objects like guns, but this one goes WAY beyond that! It is a brown paper envelope that is printed on the outside, and play dates at the bottom, and the information tells that inside the envelope are twenty pieces that are like a jigsaw puzzle that when put together form a full-color image of Captain Marvel with a facsimile signature, and there is theater information for premiere of chapter 1 in the lower left! The envelope further tells you that you need to "Paste the segments enclosed in this envelope upon a sheet or cardboard" and then bring or mail them to the theater before the premiere, and you MIGHT get one or more free tickets, and that winners would be judged on "the basis of neatness, correctness, and originality". This is a really crazy promotion, but the winner DID get ten tickets, so we bet they got a lot of entries! We further imagine that this might be one of the most rare heralds there is, especially from a superhero movie or from a serial movie! As noted above, this auction includes the printed envelope and the twenty pieces contained therein. Note that, amazingly, this example was NOT glued together, but we put them next to each other in the image so that you can see how the complete image looks (and it will be up to the new owner how they choose to display this really cool herald).

Note that this is one of a remarkable collection of 31 heralds we are currently auctioning (in 31 separate auctions). They were collected over many decades, and include many wonderful horror ones, plus other very top titles. If one tried to duplicate this collection, it would likely take many years to do so!

Condition: very good to fine. The envelope has some faint creases and scuffs. The twenty pieces within are in excellent condition (see our images).
