A Linenbacked French Special Poster (measures 41" x 74 1/2" [104 x 189 cm]) (Learn More) Mistinguett (born Jeanne Bourgeois) was a French singer, dancer and actress from the 1900s to the 1930s. She was born in 1875, and she was a dancer in music halls when she was a teenager. She became a leading French stage star (both singing and dancing), and in 1911, she "stole" Maurice Chevalier from his dance partner and girlfriend, Frehel, and Mistinguett and Chevalier became major stars (poor Frehel tried to commit suicide and had drug and alcohol problems the rest of her life). Mistinguett and Chevalier performed the 'danse de apaches', and they appeared in two movies together. Chevalier then served in World War I, and he started his solo act after the war. Mistinguett appeared solo in movies and on stage for many years. She passed away in 1956 at the age of 80. Artist: Daniel De Losque Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster, which we have only previously auctioned once before, and that was 13 years ago, when it sold for $370 (that example was only in "fair" condition)! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. We have previously auctioned a different example of this poster, and in that poster, the dress was bright red. Therefore, it would seem extremely likely that this poster was displayed and has faded considerably. It still displays pretty well, and we suppose it is possible that it is from a different printing of the poster, but we can't say. The poster also has small tears, tiny paper loss, and darkening on parts of the folds. The poster was pretty well backed, but the backer did not attempt to address the fading (if it is indeed faded), and they did not leave any excess linen around the edges. Since the poster has been backed, it acquired a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Learn More about condition grades
