Spectacular drama of an era!"; "Exotic Lily Langtry... matching her beauty against a young girl's charm!"; "Now Samuel Goldwyn brings you the most magnificent outdoor spectacle ever filmed!"; "The season's biggest, most important picture!... unfolding a drama of feud and flame that swept the West like a prairie fire. A great story for Goldwyn - great entertainment for you!"; "See settlers ride for their lives... as homes and crops roar up in flames!"; about the legendary Judge Roy Bean, who was the "Law West of the Pecos", and an imagined handsome cowboy who gets Bean together with his longtime love from afar, the "Swedish Nightingale", Lily Langtry!) starring Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; as "Judge Roy Bean"), Fred Stone, Doris Davenport, Chill Wills, Dana Andrews (very young and ninth-billed in his first major screen role!), Forrest Tucker (in his big screen debut), Lilian Bond (as Lily Langtry), and Hank Bell NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this unusual book was sent by United Artists to theater owners and exhibitors to try to get them to book this movie. We have never seen a book quite like this before! It comes with a cover letter from the Director of Advertising and Publicity at United Artists, and it is dated March 4, 1940, and it says "We are sending you a book containing 20 special stills showing production highlights from THE WESTERNER which we feel is the most important picture made by Samuel Goldwyn. Later in the letter, it says "We would suggest you keep the book so that when you play the picture, you may make use of these stills for display purposes, as they will not be available later in this special finish." Tipped-in to the first page is a sheet telling about the movie and the second page has a tipped-in sheet giving "the story". The rest of the pages have the 20 special stills mentioned above, which are inserted into each page through slits cut in each corner, and they measure 7" x 9 1/4", and each has a paper snipe lightly glued to the left of the still (on the blank backing page). Each of the stills is printed on a medium weight paper stock, with a semi-gloss finish. These are definitely NOT regular stills (either regular ones or deluxe ones), but something in between! We have never seen any of these stills before, and that does not surprise us, because the cover letter says that they were only available in this portfolio, which we have also never seen before. We have included images of seven of the stills, but we wish we could have photographed all of them, because they are all really cool! Remember that although the snipes partially cover the bottom of the still, they are not in any way attached to them, and the stills are not in any way attached to the pages, so if one chose, one could remove all 20 of the stills and have all of them in wonderful condition! Condition: very good. The portfolio has smudges and stains on the covers. There is glue residue on the back from where something was attached to it. The first two tipped-in pages have come loose and there are glue stains behind them. But ALL of the 20 stills are in wonderful condition, and as noted above, they are not attached and the snipes are not attached to the stills. Learn More about condition grades
