An Original Vintage Unfolded World War I Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 41 1/2" [70 x 105 cm]) (Learn More) 4 Minute Men, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) war poster ("A message from the Government at Washington"; "A message from Washington") featuring H. Devitt Welsh art with a large space at the bottom for a message. Note that the 4 (Four) Minute Men were a group of volunteers authorized by President Woodrow Wilson to give four minute speeches on topics provided to them by the Committee on Public Information! We are aware of two versions of this poster, one with a Revolutionary War era man in the lower right by Independence Hall, and the other with an image of the Capitol Building. Artist: H. Devitt Welsh Important Added Info: As noted above, this poster was designed with a blank rectangular area at the bottom, where those using the poster could put information about the 4 minute speech that was being delivered. In the case of this poster, it was apparently never used, because that area is blank. Also note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Condition: fair to good. The poster was never machine folded. Someone mounted it onto a very thin linen, with no excess. Either before or after it was backed, it acquired many small stains, creases, tears, and tiny areas of paper loss around the edges, but mostly in the blank borders, with a larger stain near the middle of the left blank border (see our image). It also has many creases scattered throughout. Any talented restorer could remove this poster from the old linen and properly re-back it, but bear this in mind before placing a bid on this poster.
