eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 4d0187 LOVE pressbook 1927 art of Greta Garbo as Anna Karenina embracing John Gilbert, ultra rare! Date Sold 4/16/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 10 1/2" x 17 1/2" [27 x 44 cm]; 14 pages) (Learn More) Love (released in other countries as "Anna Karenina"), the 1927 Edmund Goulding silent Russia nobility romantic love triangle melodrama ("The stars of 'Flesh and the Devil' - together again!"; the first MGM adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina"; the studio wanted a more glamorous title, and they pretty much threw away most of the novel as well, but the fans just wanted to see Garbo and Gilbert together) starring John Gilbert, Greta Garbo (as Anna Karenina), George Fawcett, Emily Fitzroy, Brandon Hurst, and Philippe De Lacy. Note that the source novel ends tragically, but MGM was afraid that would be too depressing for American audiences, so they filmed two endings to the movie, and used the original ending for the European release, but had a silly "happy ending" for the American release, where Garbo and Gilbert's characters end up happily married! Also note that the movie was remade nine years later under its original title, and this time it was much more faithful to the book, with Garbo again in the lead role, playing opposite Fredric March. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a window card (14 years ago, when it sold for $1,310), six 8x10 stills, and a glass slide from this movie (and NO other movie paper of any kind) until we received this pressbook! Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of this pressbook (if the back cover is not the poster page, we photographed the interior poster page), and of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are auctioning (plus any supplements or heralds described above)! Also note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners received pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Note that for the past 18 months, we have auctioned one of the most extraordinary collections of pressbooks ever assembled! What made it so extraordinary is that it contained lots and lots of extremely rare pressbooks, mostly from the 1930s and 1940s, including many that we had never auctioned before. In our last few regular auctions, we auctioned most of the last of this gigantic collection, and now, in this April Major Auction, we are auctioning the very last of them, and one quick look tells you that "we saved many of the very best for last"! This is your FINAL opportunity to buy from this extraordinary collection! Condition: fair, NO CUTS. The pressbook is complete and uncut. It was folded across the middle at one time, and there is some wear on the folds of the front and back covers, with paper loss in a few blank areas on the covers, and paper loss and tears around the edges of the interior pages. The interior pages are incredibly fragile. The covers and interior pages are all separated at the spine. Learn More about condition grades
