An Undated (probably 1920s) Re-Release Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the classic 1923 Wallace Worsley Universal silent Paris France Notre Dame Cathedral romantic religious historical horror melodrama ( "'Mighty Epic of a Mighty Epoch'"; adapted from the equally classic novel by Victor Hugo) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role as "Quasimodo", the Hunchback of Notre Dame), Patsy Ruth Miller (as Esmerelda), Norman Kerry, Kate Lester, Elmo Lincoln (best remembered for being the very first actor to portray Tarzan in the movies in 1918), and Winifred Bryson. Note that there was a wonderful sound remake of this classic silent movie in 1939, with Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara in the lead roles. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that there are two completely different 8 card sets of lobby cards for this classic movie. One set is green sepiatone, and the other is full color. All of the longtime collectors I have talked to are in agreement that the green sepia cards are from the very first 1923 release of this movie, and that the color cards date from a year or two later (we know the movie was heavily re-promoted in 1925 by Universal when they first released Phantom of the Opera), and after the movie became a massive worldwide hit (it stayed in first release for over three years, and was one of the greatest box office successes of silent movies!). But the card offered here is different from the few other early re-release cards we have auctioned (we only auctioned two of them, one 15 years ago and one 31 years ago). Those two were full-color, while this is a greenish color like the first release cards. We are not sure what that means. Because we sold those two cards so long ago, it is possible that the coloring was actually "hand colored" (not uncommon at that time), and that would explain it, because this card is not colored, so maybe it never got hand colored. It certainly IS a incredibly rare card (these early re-release cards are even more rare than the first release) and it IS the wonderful scene showing Chaney in full Quasimodo makeup, having been crowned! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: very good to fine. The card has the most minor of border wear. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Learn More about condition grades
