An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Race Track, the 1936 H. Bruce Humberstone Asian detective horse racing sports gambling mystery crime thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Helen Wood, Thomas Beck, Alan Dinehart, Gavin Muir, Jonathan Hale, and Sam Flint. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! This means the lobby card was backed onto a very light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable. Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. Prior to paperbacking, the card had considerable water staining along the bottom and down the right side of the image, with pinholes and stains around the edges and smudges and stains in the left 4" of the card. Overall, the lobby card was in poor to fair condition prior to paperbacking. The person who did the paperbacking did the best they could considering the condition the card was in, but the defects and restoration are very noticeable in the above areas (but fortunately not in the title or Oland's face, which were in pretty nice condition). Please look closely at our super-sized image before bidding on this card. Learn More about condition grades
